Marshfield Second to Central Linn at Bay City Duals

No South Coast wrestling team won Monday’s Bay City Duals, but with younger wrestlers littered throughout the tournament, the event was much more about getting mat time than getting a result.

Marshfield used mostly junior varsity wrestlers and finished second to Central Linn, losing 42-39 in the championship match.

Reedsport finished fourth after falling to Douglas 52-24 in the third-place match. Philomath beat South Umpqua to earn fifth. In the final dual, North Bend lost to Siuslaw 40-30 for the Bulldogs to finish eight.

Bulldogs Get First Win at Salem Tourney

North Bend’s boys basketball team got its first win of the season on Monday, beating Gervias 59-41 on the opening day of the Capitol City Classic, a tournament at Willamette University in Salem that also includes Bandon.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter and stretched it the rest of the game.

Brody Lucero had 19 points for the Bulldogs, who also got a big lift from the return of Ryan Wirth.

The senior post had nine points, as did Tyler Brown and Luke Lucero.

A threat against schools in Coos County on Friday prompted law enforcement agencies and school administrators to take precautions, but the threat doesn’t seem credible, says Sheriff Craig Zanni.

According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, “At about 7:38 a.m. (Friday), Coos County 911 Center received a report from a subject who advised that they had seen information circulating on one of the same websites that the subject in yesterday’s shooting incident at Umpqua Community College had been posting on that there would be a similar incident in Coos County today…
